A gene bank from Italy joined EUGENA
In 2026, following several years of collaboration among various stakeholders in Italy, another gene bank joined EUGENA: the IBBA-CNR Animal Germplasm Cryobank. This Italian gene bank’s collection includes 31,959 semen, blood, and hair samples from 33 breeds of cattle, goats, pigs, and sheep. The earliest samples date back to 1999, when the collection of local pig breeds began. Among these, the Nero Siciliano breed stands out, holding the largest number of semen samples in the gene bank.
